Blended Learning in Higher Education

hi my name is Alexis Schmid and I’m
going to talk to you about the literature review I conducted on blended
learning and higher education let’s get started this literature review is
completed on blended learning in higher education blended learning is the
combination of face-to-face and technology mediated instruction many
higher education institutions have been pushing to start using a form of blended
learning in their classrooms any movement toward utilizing new forms of
instruction should address the question of its effectiveness the following three
research questions were objectives of the research conducted what are the
components of effective blended learning in a higher education classroom to enter
this question literature addressing specific components taken into
consideration during several phases of implementation were reviewed how is
blended learning implemented in higher education the research that was examined
to answer this question focused on methods usability and framework
development lastly how does blended learning affect student outcomes in
higher education research addressing student satisfaction motivation and
course completion was reviewed to answer this question resources met the
following limitations English only full-text available online scholarly
peer-reviewed journals and publication years of 2012 to present day these
specific limitations were set in place so that search results produce
relatively current material that was peer reviewed and also easily accessible
via the Internet information sources were found using for
library databases which were directory of open access journals education
resource information center science direct and Scopus the limitation
criteria was entered into these databases so that the results would meet
the eligibility requirements set in place I used the following keywords
higher education and blended learning additional keywords were added for each
separate research question effectiveness was added to the question what are the
components of effective blended learning in a higher education classroom am
imitation was added to the second research question of how has blended
learning being implemented in higher education and student performance was
added to help answer the third research question of how does blended learning
affect student outcomes in higher education some of the articles produced
in the database searches required permission to access the full-text I was
able to access these through James Madison University’s pulse secure
virtual VPN network one searches were conducted using the set limitations and
keywords the results were analyzed to determine if they met the needs of the
specified research question the analysis conducted was based off the title of the
article and the information within the abstract if the information analyzed met
the needs of the research question it was selected for a full review once the
full text was analyzed information was pulled to help answer specific research
questions the search produced 1455 results which 12 total articles were
selected the results produced from the first research question were that
several components must be implemented to make blended learning effective some
of these components were the use of mobile technologies to regain
connections between teachers and students having policies in place for
acceptable use and ownership of borrowed or open resources access to massive open
online courses technological infrastructure required for effective
course management and digital literacy the results produced from the second
research question show how blended learning as being implemented in higher
education institutions some institutions are developing e-learning planning
frameworks to evaluate their e-learning capabilities redesigning classroom
activities to accommodate virtual platforms holding instructor-led event
and webinars using learning management systems to host course materials and
making sure to design and implement instruction intentionally for the
learner lastly when blended learning is being
implemented how did it affect student outcomes the results produced were
student end up course assessment scores increased especially if the course was
STEM related student satisfaction increase which is associated with
student performance and students with low motivation could be at risk for
dropping out however it was determined that students that were successful had
high intrinsic motivation summary when implemented effectively the blended
learning teaching model can benefit student outcomes there are separate
components that need to be implemented at varying phases in the instructional
process to help ensure blended learning effectiveness the blended learning model
helps to increase student engagement in the material that they are learning
relevance the results from this review of literature will be of interest to
individuals currently teaching or once who will be teaching in a higher
education environment the information will help these individuals understand
how to implement blended learning into their everyday instruction and also give
them an understanding of potential student outcomes
I believe that implementing blended learning it into higher education
classrooms is beneficial for students teachers and higher education
institutions themselves if implemented effectively student outcomes increased
resulting in higher achievement and student satisfaction which helps
maintain student enrollment and institutions overall performance
possible limitations in this literature review could be the number of
peer-reviewed scholarly articles possible biases in the selection of
articles reviewed by the researcher and search limitations that may have
resulted in a lack of articles written prior to the increase of online material
or not available in an online format implications and conclusions based on
the findings of this review blended learning can be implemented in several
different ways to refine the results of the search conducted it might be
beneficial to specify how the blended learning model would be implemented
blended learning is a teaching model that will continue to evolve in advance
as time goes on and technology changes this is a topic that will need to be
continually researched as these advances develop I hope you enjoyed this presentation if
