Welcome Minnesota State Students to the 2017-2018 Academic Year

[Opening visual: Minnesota State logo and tagline, Extraordinary Education. Exceptional Value.] Hello, I’m Devinder Malhotra, the interim
chancellor of Minnesota State. The school you attend is one of 30 state colleges and 7 state universities within the Minnesota State system, and it is indeed my privilege
and honor to welcome you to this academic year and congratulate you on choosing such
an extraordinary education and transformative path for yourself [VO with campus footage:] As I’ve visited all our campuses throughout the last several months, I have met with students like yourself and I have heard their concerns about affordability and about equity and inclusion, and I agree these are important priorities. We know going to school can be tough – classes are challenging, and you may be juggling responsibilities outside the classroom too. If you find yourself overwhelmed, be sure
to ask for help. All the faculty and staff throughout the Minnesota State system are your active partners. They are invested in your success and they can identify resources to help you stay on track, not only inside the classroom, but outside of the class too. [VO with graduation footage] Last spring, the colleges and universities of Minnesota State were proud to graduate 40,000 students. We asked a few of them, and some faculty as well, to offer advice to others who are on the same journey – here is what they
had to say… My advice to a new student would be – literally cherish every moment that you have at the university because it goes by so fast and you’re just going to wish you had it back. If you’re going back into college after being out for so long, don’t be afraid to ask questions. The balance between school and my personal life was hard, but I found my strength with working with my faculty advisors. As an instructor, there’s nothing better than to say – you know what, I know you can do this; here’s where you’ve gone so far; there’s a bright future ahead of you; just keep going, commencement is just around the corner. It’s hard. It’s a very, very, very hard thing, but it’s so worth it and every day is just another step closer. Do it. Find your passion. And just follow your dreams. It’s not too late for anybody to go to school. So just to give an example to my family and say, anybody can do it. My hope is you, like me, find inspiration in
these graduates’ words. Stay focused on your goals, and persevere through the challenges that will surely come your way. Best wishes to you for a successful year! [Closing visual: College/university logos mergingin to the Minnesota State logo and website MinnState.edu.]
